Playa del Carmen-La Quinta Avenida 15 minute drive

The eclectic and fun 5th Avenue, or La Quinta as it is more commonly known, is Playa's epicenter. You will find the majority of the restaurants, bars and shops along and around this pretty pedestrian street. Of course, being in the Caribbean, the beach is also a great place to have lunch or dinner.

The major international influence is apparent in Playa's array of restaurants. You won't run the risk of being bored of the food when in Playa. You can go Mexican, Mayan, Tex-Mex, Italian, Thai, German, Japanese, Cuban, Chinese, Argentinean, Swedish, Spanish and probably something else that we can't think of right now.

Oh, yeah, seafood! The Caribbean Ocean supplies us with fantastic fish and lobster. Most of the restaurants and bars in Playa are owner-operated, which gives a personal touch to your dining. The Mexican experience is further enhanced by small groups of mariachis or other musicians entertaining you while you eat.

The many great restaurants around La Quinta may make you forget about the local little places, where we Playenses often eat. Do try and expand your eating register with a couple of antojitos, a bowl of pozole soup or a comida corrida.

There are quiet bars, rowdy bars, bars on the second floor, bars with trees, bars on the beach, sports bars and bars with TV, pool tables or games (or all of the above) and bars with live music. Most of the bars close at 2am. Night clubs and discos are open until 4am or later. Almost all of them are free of charge. Sometimes, especially around full moon, all-night raves are arranged on the beach, quite often at Coco Beach.

5th Avenue also offers shopping of all kinds and ATM access.

Maroma Piano Cafe-Convenient Store and Art Gallery

Maroma resort is private however at the entrance on the highway there is a small convenient store, a piano bar restaurant and an art gallery. This is just a 5 minute drive from the villa.

Xcaret- 30 minute drive

With the idea of creating a tourist development that would add to the attractions of the Cancun and Cozumel, Playa del Carmen, Cancun region, a group of Mexican entrepreneurs purchased the land surrounding Xcaret eco park, Mayan word that means `small inlet`.

In 1984, Architect Miguel Quintana Pali, captivated by the Xcaret Cancun‘s site natural beauty characteristic of the Xcaret Maya region, purchased about 12 acres of this land from the group, with the idea of building his dream house near Playa del Carmen.

However, when he began to clear the Xcaret eco park land, he started uncovering ancient Mayan cenotes, sinkholes formed by cave ceilings that collapsed after 3 million years of underground rivers erosion. Awed by this magnificent sight representative of the Xcaret Maya region, he felt that so much beauty should not be accessible only to a privileged few, but should be available for the people of Mexico and the world to enjoy.

This way, Quintana began to formulate the basic idea of Xcaret eco park in Playa del Carmen, a natural park open to the public and filled with all the Xcaret Maya expressions of culture, nature and beauty. Later he joined forces with Oscar, Marcos and Carlos Constandse, and soon they transformed this great project into a dream come true: Xcaret.
